Bolt Gun Kaboom

When I posted some images of the 300 Blackout in the 223 rifle Kaboom, one of the more common throwaway lines was, “That is why I don’t run automatics”. Ehhh…ok?

So when these images crossed my desk, I figured it was time to bring this topic back to the fore. You can catastrophically kaboom any gun if you stick the wrong ammo in it. Any gun can “blow” if there is defective ammunition in it.

Cracked receiver.

Cracked receiver.

I believe the appropriate phrase is, “Whistling past the graveyard”.

Scary. The last thing any shooter should want is his/her gun blowing up in their hands.

    • I’m big on eye-pro.

Agreed. Even without a KB experience, there’s always being peppered by hot powder flash, ricochets, and even the odd case spanging off something and hitting you in the face. Modern eye protection is tough, light, and can be purchased to fit easily over prescription glasses.

I’ve never had a KB, although my ex-wife blew a handgun up with a squib load (factory ammo). My present wife is smart enough that she recognized something was wrong when she had a squib and avoided the KB. I definitely traded up.

I haven’t had that issue ever. But I don’t let idiots go around my weapons.

    • I have seen, new factory ammo KB weapons. Shoot enough, you will see failures. Of all kinds.

if he had a vortex and not the leupold, that would have been fixed for free…

    • Likely. But I wouldn’t expect Vortex to fix it for free. I’m sure there is an invisible line where civilian stupidity is segregated from a SEAL team contract.

“I’m sure there is an invisible line”… there isnt… something to consider when you drop 2k on a optic…

        • Hopefully I never find out. Personally I don’t have any Vortex stuff. I run S&B and Steiner mostly with a little Zeiss tossed in.
