I Got Shot Down

It’s been a cold week. And I gambled by going to one of the public gun ranges. It paid off: Nobody was there. Why? Recreational shooters don’t generally shoot in adverse weather. Especially the cold.  The project today: Barrel: Blaser R8 by J. Sip & Sons. Chassis: GRS Ragnarok  Caliber: 300PRC. Ammunition: Custom loads Steve’s Guns & Ammunition.  Bullet: Hornady …

POTD – Bore Sighting a Rifle

Bore sighting a Blaser has never been so easy. The GRS chassis folds. So just pull the bolt-body off and line everything up.      Sincerely,  Marky www.John1911.com “Shooting Guns & Having Fun”

10 Hours On The Range

This was a long day. The first half we hosted some shooters who were putting in their time.  What happens when they are done and clock out? It’s my time. Still working on this LMT GI Trigger / GEMTECH Integra combination.  Received a text message asking, “Are you still out there?”  “Why Yes. Yes I am”.  Sincerely,  Marky www.John1911.com “Shooting …

7.5×55 at 520 Yards

So after getting the custom barrel zeroed, I figured a shot at 520 yards with the K31 “try DOPE” was in order.  What is, “Try DOPE” you ask? Try DOPE is using existing ballistic data gathered from a similar rifle or caliber. In this case, K31 shooters firing GP11 ammo.  Don’t expect it to work. But it’s the “old man” …

XTECH – The 17rd Mag That Ain’t

First of all let me just start by saying that I am not a gear reviewer. I am a shooter. Most gear reviewers that I have seen can’t actually shoot well.  It’s tedious and a low rent space occupied click-bait writers and wanna-be Fudd’s. But somehow…here we are. Why? Because I want more than 15+1 in the HK VP9 pistol. …

Rhodesian A5 Shotgun

Some folks on Facebook saw we have a Rhodesian Army, Browning A5 shotgun and inquired about it.  These were ordered through FN in Belgium. Shipped to South Africa. And then smuggled into Rhodesia. Violating international sanctions.  Which is how they came to be serialized with electric pencil instead of traditional stamping. Or you could split hairs and call these marks …

Custom 7.5×55 Barrel

Testing a new barrel we had made by J. Sip & Sons out of Utah. It’s chambered in the 7.5 Swiss round (7.5×55).  Most shooters in the United States will know this ammo as GP11  made for the K31 Swiss, straight pull, service rifle.  We have all heard the trope that GP11 is as close to “match” ammo as one …

Staying in Position

One skill I like to own. And one habit I like to reenforce is the tendency to stay behind the rifle and looking through the glass. It sounds simple and the benefits are obvious. But if you are always coming out the glass for small admin tasks in training? You’ll come out of the glass for small admin tasks when …

Manurhin MR-88 First Shots

So…today was the day to take out the Manurhin MR88 revolver. It’s a French police model that was brought into the US as surplus.  For the revolver minded folks, you can see the obvious Ruger GP100 heritage. That can be attributed to the fact Ruger and Manurhin did work jointly on the handgun.  As for the specifics about who made …

Rock Jams Gun

Practicing mag changes with the truck gun and picked up a small rock. It worked its way though the system and lodged in the trigger mech. Jamming up both the safety and trigger.  It was a cold and wet day. That in combination with the “sticky-crud” that sometimes builds on magazines? I did myself in.  Ultimately this is user error. …

Slow Motion Short Stroke

Doc shooting the Integra while I document the short-stroke officially.  American made MILSPEC ammo functions fine in the upper. Hell! Even low power steel cased Wolf functions in the 90% range. Which is just enough to keep a shooter in tip-top shape clearing stoppages. So that’s a silver lining, right? But here’s the $64,000 question: Isn’t Wolf Gold supposed to …

Is Wolf Gold Loaded to MILSPEC

So something funny happened with the Gemtech Integra. Wolf steel cased ammo runs, basically, perfectly. Wolf Gold, brass cased ammo, chokes. The Gemtech Integra is purpose built to be suppressed. As such it has a smaller gas-port so as not to be over gassed. However it “should” work with factory military spec ammo. Especially when clean.  Additionally it is not …

One Day At a Time

New gear is new. New skills aren’t skills. They’re aspirations. The only way to overcome these limitations is to dive in and just work your way through the suck.  Incase you don’t listen to the podcast, I am primarily a pistol shooter first. And a precision rifle shooter second. The other stuff I have certainly done, but those skills have …
