Old Habits Die Hard – Shotguns

Do you have any guns designated for roles more out of habit that logic? Mine is this Mossberg 590. I have had it for over 2 decades. It’s a “home defense” gun. But in reality my CCW is the gun that fills that role. So the shotgun just lives in the closet should I need it. Additionally…and this is a …

Steel Target Shotgun Testing

Some new targets finally came in. I was curious if they would fall over without any weights on the bottom? I was pleasantly surprised by these results. Now in full disclosure it wasn’t with self-defense buckshot; but I’m happy nonetheless. Mossberg’s Going Wood

Just heard Mossberg is coming out with retro kind of wood stocked 500 & 590 shotguns. I for one am excited! I understand the 870 is a better made gun.  But I grew up shooting Mossberg and even carried a 590 professionally. Up to and including sticking them in peoples’ faces (they deserved it, BTW).  I live in a AR …

Insight / L3 Mossberg Shotgun Light

Someone asked and I honestly don’t have a lot of answers. The light I use my on Mossberg 590 is an Insight Technologies / L3 fore-end. I do not believe they are made any longer, so that is a negative. The positive of that could be you might find one on the cheap. If that happens, I can’t find any …

Mossberg 500 Hunting Setup

Our regulars know we are Mossberg fans. Some folks have key’ed in on the fact I’ve been hunting with one Mossberg or another for well over 30 years. So instead of answering the same questions over and over again via email, I thought it was time to set the record straight on video. Here are all my primary hunting shotguns. …

Vang Comp Safety Mossberg 590

We haven’t been publishing much about the shotguns since we are in the middle of a big rifle rang build. But someone wanted to know if Vang’s Mossberg safety was worth the upgrade?  I believe it is. Especially if you are engaged in high-volume training.      Marky www.John1911.com “Shooting Guns & Having Fun”

Freeze Replaces Scope on Hunting Shotgun

The scope I used on my Hunting shotgun finally went south on me. It was a great scope for many years of deer hunting; but like it or not, scopes do bite the dust. I found myself talking to my son-in-law about picking up a new scope and he reminded me that I gave him a scope years ago to …

Mossberg 590 Upgrades

This will be a picture heavy post with little description since it’s self explanatory. Shown is a Mossberg 590 I purchased back in the 1990’s. It is not the A1 since the trigger guard is plastic and it lacks a heavy barrel. Understanding that a good SD shotgun needs a light, I never put one on this 590. Why? Because …

Mossberg 500 Weaver Scope Mount

I noticed this shotgun during our dove hunt. Freeze’s SIL was running one of his 500 Mossberg’s. Obviously we don’t need scopes for wing-shooting, but a quick change of the barrel and you have a very good deer-slug gun. Anyway, my eye was drawn towards the forearm and the unusual cut. I looked at Freeze with a raised eye-brow and …

Sporterizing Mausers

They’re bygone days now because you can buy a quality and accurate rifle like a Mossberg or Savage for a few hundred bucks, but it used to be that if you wanted a good rifle on the cheap, you would build one from a surplus Mauser. I was fortunate to catch the tail end of that era. Actions were plentiful …

Mossberg Rifles Are Not Cheap

A few years back I wrote in another publication about a bear hunt where I used a Mossberg rifle topped with a Swarovski scope. In the comments section, I got a wisecrack from an Internet expert about putting a $1,000 scope on a $100 rifle. The perception was that because many Mossberg shotguns are affordable, that their rifles were cheap. …

Hunting Accident Aftermath: Rebuilding a Mossberg Shotgun

So we received some bad news this week. One state that Freeze hunts has not legalized centerfire rifle hunting for 2015. We were pretty certain that the law would be changed but it’s not meant to be. But luckily for Freeze, he has his 12 gauge shotgun ready to go.   Why is that the subject of a post? Well…2 …
