The recent discussion around 10mm handguns spurred a lot of discussion on the viability of using a 9mm for bear/animal defense.

Imagine my surprise when a Hornady catalog got delivered today and it advertises their new “Backcountry Defense” ammo, including a 138 gr 9mm!

If I was stuck with only a 9mm, this is definitely something I would look into for carrying in the woods. While a 9mm may be on the small end of the scale, a good bullet like this definitely helps. However, I’ll still much prefer a larger 10mm or wheelgun when I’m out in the backcountry.
