Word came down earlier this year that the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) was going to contract with Tisas to produce a “military surplus” copy of 1911 pistols. The reason being the government sources for USGI 1911’s are finally drying up after almost 80 years.
When news of this first broke, I wasn’t sure the 1911 collector crowd would be keen on these guns. But since then, it seems many of Tisas’ USGI commercial guns have been very popular with consumers. Particularly at the $300-400 price point.
Well when visiting the CMP website on other business, I came across this image. What appears to be a CMP approved, Tisas manufactured, USGI 1911 clone. Didn’t know this project that that far along and that any physical examples existed yet.
While this is just a 2D image, you have to admit, it certainly does look very nice. And it gets me thinking: In the near future, CMP will be able to provide new condition 1911s for it’s members. How long until CMP offers USGI, clone correct, properly marked, new production 1911A1’s in…9mm.
Personally I would love that!
And for those nay-sayers who would be bothered by such a configuration, you still have millions of 45ACP guns out there to choose from. But consider this: The CMP sells, people shoot, and compete with 7.62 M1 Garands almost every day.
The collectors might turn up their noses at such chamberings. But for folks who actually shoot a lot, these guns are where it’s at!
