OK, knocking this project off the list since it’s low hanging fruit. We purchased a Mossberg 44 US Government marked 22 rifle from Doc. He used to use it in competition. Apparently he bought it years ago with the haphazard trigger guard setup.
Looking at the pipe strap used, somebody worked pretty hard to get all this to fit, be functional and to look decent. It’s really kind of impressive. If I were to guess, I would say this was probably done in the early 1980’s. Could be older. But something about this just screams “eighties”.
Fortunately in today’s day and age, we can source obscure gun parts rather easily online. And Numrich didn’t disappoint. In less than a week, a new production Mossberg 44 trigger guard was in hand. To be safe, I added a few extra screws to the order.
After removing the pipe-strap material, and the extra layer used as a spacer, installing the replacement trigger guard was no big deal. Although I was prepared for there to be some wood filler needed in screw holes.
The only things I can add are I don’t think the lower screw is “correct” for the 44, looks a little proud to me. But Numrich wasn’t offering a replacement in stock. And the lower edge of the trigger guard looked a little to sharp for my liking so I broke that hard edge off to make it more hand-friendly.
Mossberg 44 US trigger guard project is DONE.
Sincerely,
Marky
