So just up the road from us is an INEOS Grenadier dealer. I suppose most of you have not heard of them before. Personally I only did within the last few months.
Who are they?
If I understand it correctly, a rich guy in the UK loved the Land Rover Defender. A lot. It seems Land Rover has gotten away from a true off-road vehicle and shelved the classically rugged Defender.
So what is a rich guy to do? First, offer to buy the line from Land Rover / TATA and make it himself. They said no. His next move? Go to a bar named The Grenadier and design his own “defender” that is focused on off-road work and all the things he wishes off-road vehicles had.
After a little bit of legal wrangling (Meaning they sued him), “Sir Jim” was off to the races. Hired engineers to implement the design. Bought a Mercedes Benz factory in France to build it. Then negotiated with BMW to put their engine and transmission in it. And after all of that was said and done, he named it after the bar it all started in.
Now the hard part. What do I think? In my uninformed opinion, they seem like a more luxurious Jeep. Not Lexis SUV comfortable. But way, way better than even the most expensive Wrangler package. I suspect that will appeal to many folks after looking at what a top of the line Wrangler goes for right now.
Will we get one? Dunno. Maybe. Still looking. But in the “jeep” category, it’s a way more practical option.
