Remington 81 Sniper?

Remington 81 Sniper?

Picked this used Remington 81 up from Shooter’s Supply in Loveland, Ohio. It was in on consignment and also came with some boxes of ammo (300 Savage).

The Remington 80/81 has been on our “to acquire” list for a while so when this popped up it immediately got my attention. Especially for the price.

It seems at some point in the past this sporting gun was “Sporterized” so that kinda hurt it with the purists. Which was reflected in the price. But when I looked at the gun objectively on the merits, I think it stands tall as a reference gun in a shooting collection.

  • Doesn’t appear the metal has been refinished.
  • Doesn’t appear to have been rusted out or heavily damaged.
  • The refinished / replaced wood looks great and is very functional.
  • The recoil pad looks professionally installed and I am certain useful since I suspect 300 Savage kicks like a mule.
  • And most interestingly it has been drilled and tapped for a side mounted scope. Kinda like a M1 Garand sniper rifle. And that mod looks very clean.

Scooped it right up and put it in the collection. So…do you think I should keep it the way it is, or perhaps have a custom base made and put a period correct scope back on the gun?

Sincerely,

Marky
