Got Lucky!
Five or six years ago I had a almost brand new Glock G45 stolen from me. Luckily I keep a record in what BATFE calls a “bound book”. It is a holdover from my FFL days when everything had to be recorded by hand.
Most shops today use computerized “bound books”. Some online firearms suppliers still offer old school bound books. I think a three pack is about ten bucks. I keep a record of what I acquire and dispose of in these books. I keep them separate from the armory in case of burglary and periodically take screenshots in case of fire. These records can be invaluable in case of theft, natural disaster, or gun traces by BATFE.
In this particular case, I was able to provide authorities with a serial number of the stolen pistol. Fast forward to last Friday and I received a letter from Omaha Police Department. It was an evidence release notice for said Glock. Since it had been five years, I expected to get a total POS back. Much to my surprise, the pistol looked as good as the day I bought it. A little bit of admin work literally paid off.
