POTD – 30-06 Snap Caps
I have a confession. Throughout most of my shooting life, I have tried to avoid 30-06. It’s just not a caliber that interested me. Primarily due to lack of availability to buy it in bulk.
And over time, my feelings have been proven right. I can still buy ALL KINDS of 308 ammo: 150g battle packs, 175g match, 155g European sourced match. AP. Tracer. Copper solids. Hunting loads. OTMs. Ballistics tips. Soft lead points. Etc, etc, etc.
30-06 was such a pain in the ass, that it was a major factor in deciding to sell off a Garand M1D Sniper about 25 years ago. Yes…really.
Well…times have changed. I wish I had that M1D back and we have allowed for 30-06 caliber rifles to leech back into the collection. It started a few years ago with Madsen bolt-action rifle. And recently it has come full circle with the acquisition of a Springfield 1903 sniper into The Armory.
So guess what? Of course we don’t even have 30-06 dummy rounds to cycle and test actions with. Well…no more. Through the magic of Jeff Bezos and Amazon, we have some pretty nice looking, metal 30-06 snap caps for the work bench.
The rule is, if we have “that caliber” on the rack? We gotta have that snap cap on the bench.
